Listen for the calls of black-and-white colobus monkeys while enjoying your first day on Africa’s highest mountain.

The forest gradually gives way to giant heather and open moorland.

Today’s hike rewards you with magnificent views across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic formations.

On clear days, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Meru rising from the plains far below.

Today’s climb is essential for acclimatization.

Gradually ascend toward the impressive Lava Tower, one of Kilimanjaro’s most recognizable volcanic formations.

After lunch, descend into the spectacular Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and giant senecio plants.

The descent allows your body to adapt naturally to the higher elevation before tomorrow’s climb.

Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, one of the highlights of the Machame Route.

Although the climb looks intimidating, it is a rewarding scramble rather than a technical ascent.

From the top, enjoy incredible views over the glaciers and southern slopes before continuing through alpine valleys to Karanga Camp.

The afternoon is dedicated to rest and acclimatization.

Today’s hike is relatively short but important.

Climb steadily to Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt.

Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and organizing your equipment.

Your mountain guides will conduct a complete summit briefing and health assessment before an early dinner.

Try to sleep as much as possible before the midnight departure.

Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

Distance: Approximately 17 km

Hiking Time: 11–15 Hours

Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m

Habitat: Arctic Zone → Rainforest

Around midnight, begin your summit ascent beneath a sky filled with stars.

The slow, steady climb leads to Stella Point (5,756 m), where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise over East Africa.

Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point on the African continent.

Celebrate your remarkable achievement with photographs before beginning the descent to Barafu Camp for refreshments.

Continue down to Mweka Camp, where your final night on the mountain awaits.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Elevation Loss: 1,460 m

Habitat: Rainforest

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your official Kilimanjaro National Park Summit Certificate.

Meet your driver and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, a celebratory meal, and a well-earned rest.
