The 5-Day Mount Kenya Trek via the Chogoria Route (Ascend) and Sirimon Route (Descend) is the most scenic way to reach Point Lenana (4,985 m). This unforgettable trek takes you through bamboo forests, alpine lakes, dramatic valleys, waterfalls, and Afro-alpine landscapes before rewarding you with a spectacular sunrise from Kenya's highest trekking summit. Descending via the gentle Sirimon Route provides a comfortable finish to one of East Africa's finest mountain adventures.

Day 01 :

Nairobi – Chogoria – Meru Mount Kenya Bandas

Starting Elevation: Approximately 1,795 m (Nairobi)

Ending Elevation: 2,900 m

Hiking Distance: Approximately 10 km

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Habitat: Bamboo Forest & Montane Forest

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Overnight: Meru Mount Kenya Bandas (2,900 m)

Depart Nairobi at approximately 7:00 AM, travelling through Kenya’s fertile central highlands via Embu to Chogoria Town.

After lunch, continue by 4×4 vehicle (road conditions permitting) towards the eastern boundary of Mount Kenya National Park. Meet your mountain crew before beginning a gentle trek through bamboo forest and lush montane vegetation to Meru Mount Kenya Bandas.

This relaxed first day provides an excellent introduction to the mountain while allowing your body to begin adapting to the altitude.

Meru Mount Kenya Bandas – Lake Ellis Camp

Elevation: 2,900 m → 3,600 m

Distance: Approximately 9 km

Overnight: Lake Ellis Camp (3,600 m)

After breakfast, continue through open moorlands towards the beautiful Lake Ellis, one of Mount Kenya’s most picturesque alpine lakes.

Along the way, enjoy magnificent views of Mugi Hill, Ithanguni, Giant’s Billiard Table, and the dramatic Gorges Valley.

The peaceful surroundings of Lake Ellis provide an ideal environment for acclimatisation before climbing higher.

Today’s trek follows spectacular alpine terrain while gradually gaining altitude.

Cross open valleys filled with giant groundsels before reaching Minto’s Camp, located near the famous Temple Cliffs and overlooking the breathtaking Gorges Valley.

If weather permits, take a short walk to one of the nearby viewpoints to witness a spectacular sunset over the valley.
